Practicum 391

The school I had my first practicum in which I was doing some of the teaching in was in Williams Lake at the Sacred Heart Catholic elementary school in the Kindergarten classroom. I began to teach a significant amount of the math lessons during my time there and had noticed how difficult one student in particular was struggling with the math. I kept trying to engage him in different ways but felt like I was failing and couldn’t get him to engage. Due to attendance issues and other behind the scene obstacles this student seemed to drastically struggle to complete the math lessons. However, I was very determined to get him involved in math in a way that he felt successful and was having fun. Thus, came the playodough shapes. Some students were able to make the shapes with lollipop sticks and playodough just by looking at a card on the board. However, for this other student I gave him a card in which he could lay his playodough directly over it and mimic the shape. To my great joy he completed the entire lesson and even answered some of the questions at the end as to how many sides certain shapes had. My CT even came up to me afterwards and said she had never seen this student engage in a math lesson like that before. This lesson gave me a great gateway to know how this student learned best and my future lessons were able to be tailored to include ways he could also learn the lesson.
